In New York wordt Kerstmis altijd uitbundig gevierd. Doris Walker, die het niet zo op de kerstdagen heeft begrepen, krijgt de opdracht dit evenement voor het grote warenhuis Macy's in goede banen te leiden. Wanneer één van de kerstmannen dronken op het werk opdaagt, wordt de oude Kris Kringle opgetrommeld als vervanger. De man probeert de mensen opnieuw de kerstsfeer bij te brengen en beweert zelfs de echte kerstman te zijn. Wanneer Kringle na een psychologisch onderzoek gek wordt verklaard, belandt hij in de gevangenis. Fred Gaily, een vriend van Doris, moet nu voor de rechtbank bewijzen dat Kringle wel degelijk de echte kerstman is.
