De vijftienjarige puber Mia brengt zichzelf regelmatig in de problemen. Ze is van school gegooid en verstoten door haar vriendinnen. Samen met haar moeder en haar elfjarige zusje woont ze in een kleine flat in een troosteloze probleemwijk van Essex. Op een zomerse dag brengt haar moeder een mysterieuze en aantrekkelijke minnaar mee naar huis. Deze nieuwe man lijkt liefde en verandering in hun leven te brengen.
