De jonge, conservatieve en onsuccesvolle Engelse schrijver Henry verkoopt zijn roman aan niemand. Maar als zijn boek plotseling een verrassende hit is in Mexico, dringt zijn publicist erop aan dat hij daarheen reist voor een promotietournee. Bij aankomst ontdekt een verwarde Henry de reden achter de populariteit van zijn roman - de Mexicaanse vertaalster Maria heeft zijn saaie boek herschreven als een broeierige erotische roman. Henry is woedend en Maria terughoudend. Ze moeten nu samen op een boektournee door Mexico. Terwijl de gemoederen hoog oplaaien en de vonken overslaan, beginnen de twee ondanks zichzelf liefde en begeerte te vinden.
